Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no official statement on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Current Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
