This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
