European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
