Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
